The Food Department in Dinajpur has canceled the licenses of 316 rice mills and grain traders for failing to sign agreements with the government. Among them, 296 were parboiled rice mills and 20 were atap (non-parboiled) mills. According to separate official orders issued on April 16 by Dinajpur District Food Controller Subir Nath Chowdhury, these mills can no longer process paddy, market rice, or store grain at their facilities. Violations will lead to government seizure of stock and legal actions.
The canceled licenses include parboiled mills across various upazilas: 40 in Dinajpur Sadar, 4 in Biral, 60 in Bochaganj, 15 in Kaharole, 11 in Birganj, 4 in Khansama, 33 in Chirirbandar, 16 in Parbatipur, 40 in Fulbari, 7 in Birampur, 2 in Hakimpur, 28 in Nawabganj, and 37 in Ghoraghat. Of the 20 canceled atap mills, 19 are in Dinajpur Sadar and 1 in Chirirbandar.
During the 2024-25 Aman procurement season, which ran from November 17, 2024, to February 28, 2025, the government targeted to collect 52,872 metric tons of parboiled rice, 13,806 metric tons of atap rice, and 17,791 metric tons of paddy in the district. Out of 911 contracted parboiled mills and 83 atap mills, the government managed to collect 48,724.40 metric tons of parboiled rice (98% of target), 11,306.46 metric tons of atap rice (96%), and only 2,258 metric tons of paddy (13%).
On April 8, the Directorate General of Food ordered cancellation of licenses for mills that were eligible for contracts during the Aman procurement but failed to comply, leading to the revocation of 316 licenses in Dinajpur.
