Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya have resigned from their positions as advisors to the interim government. A source at the Chief Adviser’s office confirmed to Prothom Alo on Wednesday evening that their resignation letters have been submitted.

Both Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud had served as student representatives in the advisory council, representing the youth who led the July uprising. Mahfuz oversaw responsibilities at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, while Asif handled duties at the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, as well as the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Following the fall of the Awami League government during the July popular uprising on August 5, 2024, an interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus was formed on August 8. The advisory council initially included 23 members, including the Chief Adviser. Among them, two student representatives have now stepped down.

When the government was formed, student representative Md. Nahid Islam was part of the advisory council. He later resigned on February 25 to become the convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), which was established by young leaders involved in the July uprising.

Mahfuz Alam initially served as the special assistant to the Chief Adviser, appointed on August 28 last year, and later took the oath as an advisor on November 10. He was assigned the role of Information Advisor following Nahid Islam’s resignation.

Asif Mahmud, meanwhile, initially managed responsibilities for the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. In November of last year, after the passing of A.F. Hasan Arif, Asif was assigned the Ministry of Local Government in addition to his ongoing duties at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
