The Election Commission (EC) has canceled the nomination papers of two BNP candidates—Sarwar Alamgir in the Chattogram-2 constituency and Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan in Cumilla-10. The decision was delivered on Sunday after separate appeal hearings.
Earlier, returning officers had initially accepted the nomination papers of both candidates during the scrutiny process.
In the case of Chattogram-2, the EC upheld an appeal challenging Sarwar Alamgir’s eligibility on the grounds that he is a loan defaulter, leading to the cancellation of his candidacy. Meanwhile, the candidacy of BNP nominee Aslam Chowdhury in Chattogram-4 was allowed to stand.
For Cumilla-10, an appeal alleged that BNP candidate Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan holds dual citizenship. He was absent during the appeal hearing, after which the EC ruled to invalidate his nomination.
