Nahid Islam Addresses Resignations of Tasnim Jara and Tajnuba Jabin from NCP

Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has commented on the resignations of party leaders Tasnim Jara and Tajnuba Jabin. Responding to journalists, he said that decisions about remaining in the party or contesting elections are personal choices.

He made the remarks on Sunday night at a press briefing held at the NCP’s central office in Banglamotor, where he was present to explain the party’s electoral understanding with Jamaat-e-Islami and seven other political groups.

When asked whether the resignations of the two female leaders and objections raised by several others over the alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami could lead to internal divisions, Nahid Islam said the decision was taken after discussions within the party’s executive council and was approved by a majority.

He added that differing opinions are natural in any democratic process and individuals may have objections. However, he claimed that the NCP’s central leadership, grassroots activists, and affiliated organizations largely support the alliance decision. “We will continue discussions with those who oppose it and try to address their concerns. We hope they will ultimately stand by the party’s decision,” he said.

Asked whether the NCP would nominate candidates in constituencies where former party members are running as independents, Nahid Islam said candidate selection would not be influenced by who is contesting independently. Instead, candidates will be chosen based on alignment with the party’s goals, grassroots involvement, and public acceptability.

Tasnim Jara, the party’s senior joint member secretary, resigned from the NCP on Saturday following the finalization of the electoral understanding with Jamaat-e-Islami. In a Facebook post, she announced that she would not contest the election as a candidate of any party or alliance and would instead run as an independent from the Dhaka-9 constituency.

She has already begun collecting voter signatures in areas including Khilgaon, Sabujbagh, Mugda, and Manda to qualify as an independent candidate.

Tajnuba Jabin, a joint convener of the NCP, also stepped down over the same issue. She had previously been nominated by the party to contest from the Dhaka-17 seat and had already begun campaigning. In a Facebook post on Sunday afternoon, she expressed strong opposition to the alliance, stating that she could not accept the decision under any circumstances.

Several senior NCP leaders were present at the press conference alongside Nahid Islam, including Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain and central leaders Nasiruddin Patwari, Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, Ariful Islam Adib, and Abdul Hannan Masud, as well as party leaders Mahmudah Mitu, Dilshana Parul, and Nabila Tasnim.
