Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi to be Observed on September 6 in Bangladesh

The crescent moon of the holy month of Rabi‘ al-Awwal was not sighted in Bangladesh today. As a result, the Islamic festival of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi will be observed on Saturday, September 6.

This was announced during a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee on Sunday, August 24. The meeting was held at the Baitul Mukarram auditorium of the Islamic Foundation at 6:30 PM (after Maghrib prayers), chaired by Religious Affairs Adviser Dr. A. F. M. Khalid Hossain.

Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi is observed every year on the 12th of Rabi‘ al-Awwal according to the Hijri calendar, commemorating the birth and passing of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Since the moon was not sighted today, the month of Safar will complete 30 days, making the 12th of Rabi‘ al-Awwal fall on September 6.

The term Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi means the celebration of the Prophet’s birth. Muslims worldwide honor this day as both the birth and the passing (wafat) of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He was born in 570 AD in the Quraysh tribe of Mecca and passed away at the age of 63 on the same date.

In Bangladesh, Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi is observed as a public holiday.
