Earthquake tremors shake Dhaka and neighboring countries
A moderate earthquake was felt across parts of Bangladesh, including Dhaka, this afternoon.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake measured 5.5 in magnitude, with the epicenter located about 14 kilometers from Udalguri near Dalgaon town in Assam, India.
Data from the Android Earthquake Alert System indicated a slightly higher magnitude of 5.9, with the epicenter about 16 kilometers away from Dhekiajuli in Assam.
The tremors were recorded in Dhaka at around 5:11 pm. As of the latest updates, no casualties have been reported.
The quake was also experienced in Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of China.
For context, Bangladesh’s last major quake of 6.2 magnitude struck Chattogram on November 21, 1997, claiming at least 25 lives. Another tremor of the same magnitude hit the port city on November 26, 2021, leaving five people injured.
