Former Education Minister and his family’s bank accounts were seized

Bank accounts of former education minister and his family have been seized. Bank account transactions of businesses owned by them have been suspended and bank account information has been requested.

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of the Bangladesh Bank has sent a letter containing instructions in this regard to the banks and financial institutions of the country. In the letter, the BFIU directed to seize the bank accounts of Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury, his wife Emma Clara Button and their two children Nina Emily Fawzia Chowdhury and Hannah Shreya Eni Chowdhury and provide their account details.

According to the letter, if any account is maintained in the name of the said persons and their privately owned companies, the transactions of those accounts shall be suspended for 30 days under Section 23 (1) (c) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012 and the use of any lockers in their name shall be suspended for 30 days. Instructions are given to close for the day.

After the August 5 political change, various ministers of the former government are being arrested. Along with that many bank accounts have been seized. Following this, the bank accounts of the former education minister and his family members have been seized.
