Govt amends labour law lowering trade union requirement

The government has revised the labour law, reducing the minimum number of workers needed to create a trade union in order to align the legislation with global standards.

According to a gazette published on November 17, a union can now be established with as few as 20 employees in a single workplace.

This move follows resistance from some business groups, who argue that permitting unions with such a small membership could disrupt factory operations — a concern dismissed by labour leaders, who say the change strengthens worker representation
