U.S. President Donald Trump has said he holds a short list of candidates he considers suitable to lead Iran. According to him, there are three names on that list that he regards as “very strong choices.”
Speaking on Sunday, Trump made the remarks a day after the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes inside Iran on Saturday morning. The attacks were described as targeting the country’s current religious leadership.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—who had led the country for 36 years—was reportedly killed in the strikes. Several other senior Iranian officials were also said to have died.
President Trump claimed that 48 high-ranking Iranian leaders were killed in the operation. Iranian state media reported that, in addition to Khamenei, his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson were among the fatalities.
Among the senior officials reportedly killed were Khamenei’s security adviser Ali Shamkhani; Armed Forces Chief General Abdolrahim Mousavi; Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh; and Mohammad Pakpour, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Trump also stated that individuals seeking to form Iran’s new leadership had expressed interest in opening talks with the U.S. administration, and that he was open to such discussions.
In an interview with The New York Times, Trump said he has three “very good” options in mind for who could lead Iran but declined to reveal their identities. “I won’t announce the names now,” he said. “Let’s finish the job first.”
Trump has previously indicated that the strikes were aimed at bringing about a change in Iran’s government. The targeted killings of Khamenei and other top officials appear to reinforce that objective.
However, analysts caution that reshaping Iran’s leadership and political system may prove far more complex than it appears.
