Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau traveled to Florida to meet with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, reportedly to address Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on Canadian goods. According to media reports, Trudeau landed at Palm Beach International Airport on Friday evening and proceeded to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. This unannounced visit followed Trump’s declaration earlier in the week that he would impose tariffs on all imports from Mexico and Canada once he takes office in January. Trudeau had previously held a phone conversation with Trump and subsequently convened a meeting with Canadian provincial leaders to discuss strategies for managing U.S.-Canada relations under Trump’s administration.
Neither Trudeau’s office nor Trump’s team commented on the meeting, and it was absent from Trudeau’s public itinerary. Sources revealed that the two leaders shared a dinner. Reflecting on his earlier term, Trudeau noted that Canada had successfully renegotiated a major trade deal with Trump despite occasional tensions between them. Speaking at an event in Prince Edward Island on Friday, Trudeau emphasized the mutual economic benefits of U.S.-Canada collaboration and expressed his intention to persuade Trump that the proposed tariffs would harm not only Canadians but also Americans by driving up prices and damaging the U.S. economy.
The U.S. is Canada’s largest trading partner, accounting for 75% of Canadian exports. Trudeau’s Florida trip is viewed as Canada’s latest attempt to avert tariffs, with analysts suggesting that Trump’s threats may be a negotiation tactic. Similar threats have been made against Mexico, with Trump hinting that tariffs would remain until both countries secure their borders with the U.S. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also reportedly spoke with Trump regarding the matter.
