The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed seven countries, including India, on its list of "uncooperative" nations. The other countries on the list are Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Bhutan, Cuba, and Venezuela. These countries have been accused of not adequately assisting in the deportation process of immigrants without legal documentation. Such non-cooperation can also challenge diplomatic relations.
According to NDTV, the new list comes as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is set to take office next month. During his campaign, Trump emphasized his tough stance on immigration. ICE's data shows that the Trump administration plans to deport 1.45 million immigrants who lack proper documentation, including over 18,000 from India.
Trump’s anti-immigration policies are seen as among the most aggressive in U.S. history. He has stated that the military may be used to identify undocumented immigrants, and he has also promised to tighten border security with Mexico. In addition to immigration, Trump has indicated that he plans to impose higher tariffs on India, despite praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to a report from the Times of India, over 90,000 Indians attempted to enter the U.S. illegally in the past three years, most from Gujarat, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh. However, Indians are not the largest group of undocumented immigrants in the U.S., with Honduras and Guatemala having the highest numbers.
