A petition has been filed in the High Court to enforce strict measures against fireworks, firecrackers, and the release of sky lanterns on New Year's Eve. The petition, submitted on Monday, December 30, by Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman, names the Home Ministry Secretary, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, among others, as respondents.
The petition seeks directives to impose a Section 144-like restriction from 10 PM to 1 AM, prohibiting fireworks, firecrackers, and sky lanterns on rooftops, in open spaces, parks, and all other areas. It also calls for banning the sale of these items and restricting public gatherings in streets, parks, and open areas during these hours. Additionally, the petition requests the deployment of mobile courts to ensure compliance with these measures.
