The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for individual taxpayers to file their income tax returns by an additional month. A special order issued today set the new deadline for 31 December, replacing the earlier cutoff of 30 November.

NBR also issued a separate directive stating that taxpayers who are unable to submit their returns online due to registration issues in the e-return system may apply to their respective deputy tax commissioners by 15 December, providing valid reasons for the difficulty.

According to NBR, online return filing has been made mandatory this year for all individual taxpayers except a few categories: senior citizens aged 65 or above, people with disabilities or special needs, Bangladeshis living abroad, legal representatives submitting returns on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. Although certain groups have been exempted from the mandatory online filing requirement for the 2025–26 tax year, they may still choose to file electronically if they wish.

Authorized representatives of taxpayers may also file online returns on their client’s behalf. For Bangladeshis residing abroad, online filing is not compulsory; however, they can register for the e-return system by sending their passport number, national ID number, email address, and other required details to ereturn@etaxnbr.gov.bd. Once the email application is processed, the applicant receives an OTP and registration link to complete the online setup.

Taxpayers can file their returns from home by entering accurate information on income, expenses, assets, and liabilities into the e-return portal—without the need to upload documents. Payments can be made using debit or credit cards, internet banking, or mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad. After submitting the return online, users can instantly download their filing slip and generate their tax certificate.

So far this year, more than 1.8 million taxpayers have submitted their income tax returns through the online system.
