The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has reported the arrest of Mohammad Sarwar Alam, an assistant programmer at Bangabhaban, in connection with the hacking of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman’s former X (formerly Twitter) account.

Sarwar Alam was detained late Tuesday night from the Rajarbagh area in Dhaka and brought to the DB office for questioning.

Shafiqul Islam, Additional Commissioner of the DB, told Prothom Alo that Sarwar Alam has been summoned for questioning regarding the hacking incident. Further action will be taken based on the investigation.

According to DB sources, Sarwar Alam was arrested around 12:30 a.m. near the government quarters east of the Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium. His mobile phone and laptop were seized as evidence.

The hacking followed a controversial post from Shafiqur Rahman’s X account last Saturday afternoon, which criticized working women in the name of “modernity,” claiming that leaving the home exposes them to exploitation, moral decay, and insecurity. The post sparked widespread criticism on social media, particularly among BNP supporters and activists.

Jamaat issued a statement late Saturday night claiming that false content had been circulated under the party chief’s name through a cyber attack, affecting the accounts of several senior leaders as well.

On Sunday morning, Jamaat held an emergency press conference at its central office in Mogbazar, Dhaka, where IT officials Sirajul Islam and Mahmudur Rahman explained how the X account was hacked. According to them, the attack involved sending a file via a government email account, assistantprogrammer@bangabhaban.gov.bd, which contained election-related information. The email was reportedly sent by Sarwar Alam, who works at the President’s Office.
