Former Narayanganj district Chhatra Dal president Zakir Khan has been acquitted in the high-profile murder case of businessman Sabbir Alam Khandaker. The announcement was confirmed by court police inspector Md. Kaiyum Khan on Tuesday, January 7, at noon.
Following the news of the acquittal, Zakir Khan's supporters celebrated with a procession outside the court. Thousands of his followers had gathered in anticipation of the hearing. According to reports, Zakir Khan has faced a total of 33 cases over the years, of which he has already been acquitted in 30. He remains on bail in two of the remaining three cases. With the dismissal of charges in the Sabbir murder case, his legal team has stated that no further obstacles remain for his release.
Public Prosecutor Advocate Khandaker Azizul Haque Hantu explained that all accused in the case were acquitted due to a lack of evidence. The murder in question dates back to February 18, 2003, when businessman leader Sabbir Alam Khandaker was fatally shot. Following the incident, his brother, former BNP district president and current Trinamool BNP Secretary-General Taimur Alam Khandaker, filed a case at Fatulla police station, naming former MP Gias Uddin as the prime accused along with 16 others.
