Due to security concerns, police in Magura could not present the accused in a child rape case before the court during the day on Sunday. Considering the situation, the court held a remand hearing at midnight.
In the hearing, the chief judicial magistrate of Magura, Abdul Matin, granted a seven-day remand for the main accused, Hitu Sheikh, the father-in-law of the victim's sister. Additionally, a five-day remand was approved for the victim’s sister’s husband, mother-in-law, and brother.
Magura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ayub Hossain stated that students and the public staged a protest in front of the Magura court premises on Sunday, demanding the accused receive the death penalty within 24 hours. Due to security concerns, the suspects were not presented before the court, and the remand petition was not submitted at that time.
Magura Additional Superintendent of Police Mirajul Islam told Samakal that the child’s mother filed a case against four individuals. The accused were already in custody and were officially arrested following the case filing.
The four accused are the child’s brother-in-law Sajib (18), Sajib’s brother Ratul (17), their father Hitu Sheikh (42), and their mother Jabeda Begum (40). According to the additional police superintendent, Hitu Sheikh committed the rape while the other three assisted him.
According to the case statement filed on Saturday (March 8), the victim’s mother stated that her elder daughter’s husband facilitated the crime, allowing his father, Hitu Sheikh, to rape the child. The accused’s wife and another son were also aware of the incident. They allegedly attempted to cover up the crime and even tried to kill the child.
The statement further mentions that four months earlier, Sajib had married the victim’s elder sister. Since then, his father-in-law, Hitu Sheikh, had been making inappropriate advances toward the elder sister. The family was aware of this but did not protest.
The case details state that on Wednesday at 10 PM, the child slept in the same room as her elder sister and her husband after dinner. Around 2:30 AM, the elder sister woke up and found the child lying on the floor, complaining of a burning sensation in her private parts. Initially, the elder sister dismissed it, but when the child repeated her complaint at 6 AM, she took it seriously and inquired further. The child then revealed that her brother-in-law had unlocked the door, allowing her father (Hitu Sheikh) to enter. He covered her mouth, took her to another room, and choked her when she tried to scream.
Hitu Sheikh later left the child in her sister’s room. When the elder sister tried to inform their mother over the phone, Sajib snatched the phone and physically assaulted her, threatening to kill them if they told anyone. The two sisters were then locked in separate rooms. By 10:30 AM, the child’s condition worsened, and Sajib’s mother took her to Magura Sadar Hospital, but she abandoned her there and fled.
