The Appellate Division has postponed the hearing on the state’s appeal against the acquittal of all accused, including Tarique Rahman, in the widely discussed August 21 grenade attack case. The hearing, initially scheduled for Sunday, May 4, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 6. On January 12, the High Court acquitted Tarique Rahman, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment, and former State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar, who had been sentenced to death, along with other convicts. The High Court stated that the verdicts delivered by the trial court were unlawful, having been reached through illegitimate means. The state has filed a leave-to-appeal petition challenging this ruling. In the original trial, 19 people including Babar were sentenced to death, Tarique Rahman and 18 others to life in prison, and 11 individuals received varying jail terms.
