Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin said on Saturday that elections based on a proportional representation (PR) system cannot be introduced without changes to existing laws, as the Constitution does not permit such an arrangement.
Speaking at a views-exchange meeting with election officials in Rajshahi, Nasir remarked that although political parties are debating the matter, the Election Commission has no authority to act beyond the law. “Only after a legal amendment would the PR system be feasible,” he noted.
He further informed that preparations are underway to organize the next national polls ahead of Ramadan in February. The CEC warned that attempts to manipulate polling centres or ballot boxes will not succeed, stressing that law enforcement will take stern action. If any polling station is forcefully occupied, voting there would be cancelled entirely.
Nasir added that the Commission is working to involve the armed forces alongside other security agencies during the elections. Responding to queries, he said he has not faced any government interference regarding the polls. “If undue pressure is exerted, I will step down rather than continue,” he declared.
Commenting on political developments, the CEC observed that the ruling Awami League is currently facing trial proceedings, which restrict their participation in political activities. The outcome of the case will determine the party’s future role in the elections.
He also mentioned that the Election Commission employs around 5,700 officials, and those accused of irregularities in past elections will not be retained. Detailed guidance has already been provided to regional officers on election preparations.
