Security Tightened Across Dhaka University Ahead of Ducsu Election

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali has announced that security across Dhaka University has been significantly strengthened ahead of tomorrow’s Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election.

Speaking at a press briefing outside the DMP temporary control room at the Dhaka University Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) on Monday, the commissioner said:
“Tomorrow’s Ducsu election will be conducted peacefully and securely. Insha Allah, no untoward incidents will occur. I assure everyone of this.” He also urged students and staff not to take the law into their own hands and to seek police assistance in case of any security issues.

Security Arrangements

Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali detailed the safety measures:

  • Eight checkpoints will be set up at entry points to the university.

  • Booth-based security will be reinforced by foot patrols and mobile police teams.

  • Plainclothes detectives from the Detective Branch (DB) and specialized CCTV monitoring units will be on duty.

  • Additional personnel from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and other security agencies will also be deployed.

To ensure public safety, the commissioner announced a temporary ban on carrying or displaying firearms and explosives within Dhaka University and nearby areas from 8:00pm Monday until 12:00pm on September 11, applicable to all except authorized security personnel.

Personnel Deployment

Currently, 1,741 DMP officers are deployed in and around the university for election security. This number will increase to 2,096 tomorrow. The commissioner confirmed that security measures will remain in place until 6:00pm on September 10 and may be extended if necessary.

Traffic Management

The DMP has arranged alternative routes around Shahbagh Crossing, High Court Crossing, Nilkhet, Shahidullah Hall, and Palashi Crossing to manage traffic during the election. Residents have been requested to use these alternative routes to minimize congestion.
