MPO-Listed Teachers Call Off Protest, Announce Return to Classrooms

Teachers and staff from non-government educational institutions listed under the MPO scheme have decided to end their ongoing protest.

The announcement came around 2:00 PM on Tuesday at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, following the government’s decision to increase house rent allowance by 15 percent of the basic salary.

Earlier in the day, the Finance Ministry issued a letter to the Ministry of Education confirming the approval of the increased allowance. The written order was later handed over to the protesting teachers by Education Adviser C.R. Abrar.

Following the government’s move, Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of the MPO Education Nationalisation Alliance, declared the withdrawal of all protest programs at the rally, saying,

“We have decided to end our movement and resume classes from tomorrow.”

He added that the government order specifies a 15 percent rise in house rent allowance—7.5 percent (not less than Tk 2,000) to take effect in November this year, and the remaining 7.5 percent in July 2026.

Delwar Hossain also mentioned that teachers missed eight days of classes during the protest. To make up for the lost time, educational institutions will remain open on Saturdays until the annual exams.

He expressed gratitude to all political parties and organizations—including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, and Islami Andolon—for showing solidarity with their movement.

The MPO teachers and employees had been on strike since October 12, pressing for a three-point demand, which included an increase in house rent allowance.
