Clashes Erupt at Chittagong University: 20 Injured Including Proctor

Tensions flared again at Chittagong University (CU) as a clash broke out between students and local residents on Sunday. The incident occurred around 12:20 PM near the London Building area, close to Gate 2 of the university.

Reports indicate that university students were attacked from three directions, leaving at least 20 people injured, including the proctor. Two of the injured have been taken to hospital for treatment.

During the violence, several students were seen throwing stones at nearby homes. Both sides engaged in brick-throwing and stick attacks, turning the area into a chaotic battlefield.

The clashes followed an incident on Saturday night (August 30) when a female student was allegedly assaulted by a building caretaker while entering her flat. Witnessing students intervened, prompting the caretaker to flee. Locals reportedly began hurling bricks and stones at the students, which escalated into a full-scale confrontation.

The situation worsened when announcements from a nearby mosque allegedly incited further attacks on students at Gate 2 from midnight onwards. Several students were reportedly severely injured during the attacks.

In response to the unrest, the university administration has suspended all classes and exams for the day, citing safety concerns. The campus remains tense as authorities monitor the situation.
