DUCSU Polls Begin Amid Enthusiasm of Students
The long-awaited Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election began this morning, drawing large crowds of eager students at polling centres across the campus.
From early dawn, students from different residential halls flocked to their respective centres, many lining up as early as 6:00am.
For many first-time voters, the experience felt historic. “I came here at daybreak to cast my vote for the candidate of my choice. Honestly, I could hardly sleep last night because of the excitement. This is my first real taste of voting in a democratic atmosphere,” said Imdadul Haque, a student from Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, at the Udayan School polling centre.
Another early voter, Mohaiminul Islam, a law student from Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, shared a similar sentiment. “My goal was to be the first voter here. I woke up very early, had breakfast, and came straight to the centre. I wanted to make sure my ballot was cast before anyone else’s. In Sha Allah, this election will remain fair, and we will freely vote for our preferred candidates.”
Students described the environment as lively and secure, noting that only members of the university community were present on campus. “It feels festive. We are voting for the first time, and we want our leaders to uphold the spirit of independence,” one student remarked.
Campaigning also continued at the centres. DUCSU vice-president candidate Md Abidul Islam Khan, supported by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, visited the Udayan School centre around 7:35am. He encouraged students to participate, saying, “This is a rare chance to vote in a democratic process. Don’t miss it—come out and make your voices heard.”
