India has reportedly extended the visa of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as revealed by Hindustan Times. This development comes just a day after the interim government in Bangladesh canceled the passports of 97 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina. However, the report did not specify the exact date when her visa was extended.
According to Hindustan Times, Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India since leaving Bangladesh on August 5 last year, following widespread protests against the Awami League government by students and citizens. The extension of her visa was facilitated by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs and the local Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO). Despite speculation, the report denied claims of political asylum being granted to her.
The extension is seen as a potential response to Bangladesh's interim government, which recently requested Sheikh Hasina’s extradition from New Delhi on December 23, citing allegations of genocide and crimes against humanity. This move is perceived as an effort to increase pressure on India regarding her return.
