Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to deliver his first address as Bangladesh’s prime minister at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday, following a packed first day in New York that included 10 high-profile engagements with world leaders, international organizations and development partners.
According to officials, the prime minister will speak in Bangla and highlight Bangladesh’s democratic transition and key national priorities before the global audience.
On Wednesday, Rahman participated in meetings focused on humanitarian assistance, climate action and the Rohingya crisis. During a high-level meeting on the Rohingya issue, he proposed five urgent measures aimed at facilitating the safe, voluntary and sustainable repatriation of displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar.
The proposals included developing a credible international roadmap for repatriation, ensuring security and rights for Rohingyas in Myanmar, securing predictable humanitarian funding, strengthening international accountability efforts and enhancing regional cooperation against cross-border crimes.
Officials said the prime minister’s first day at the UN reflected a “360-degree diplomatic and economic strategy,” covering multilateral diplomacy, regional cooperation, humanitarian issues and economic partnerships.
Rahman attended a special breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and later joined a dinner reception hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump for world leaders attending the UN General Assembly.
He also participated in the UN General Assembly’s opening session and held bilateral meetings with leaders from several countries, including Türkiye, Bhutan, the Maldives and Haiti.
During talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, both leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in multiple sectors. Erdoğan also invited Rahman to visit Türkiye, officials said.
Meetings with Bhutanese and Maldivian leaders focused on regional cooperation, while discussions with Haiti centered on Bangladesh’s experience in UN peacekeeping operations.
The prime minister also met representatives of the World Bank to discuss investment, economic reforms, healthcare, education, employment and budgetary support for Bangladesh.
In addition, Rahman held discussions with international philanthropic and humanitarian organizations, including the Gates Foundation, Visa Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Rotary International. The talks focused on development cooperation, climate challenges, humanitarian assistance and sustainable growth initiatives.
Officials said Bangladesh also used the UN platform to renew international efforts for resolving the Rohingya crisis and securing conditions necessary for their eventual return to Myanmar.
Prime Minister Rahman is expected to continue a series of high-level engagements throughout the remainder of his visit before addressing the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
