Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, has stated that both the United States and India are committed to seeing Bangladesh thrive as a stable, prosperous, and resilient nation, emphasizing the shared interests of the two nations in this vision. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata last Friday, Garcetti stressed the need for closer collaboration between the U.S. and India on matters concerning Bangladesh.
According to a report by The Times of India, Garcetti noted that the current Biden administration, as well as the upcoming Trump administration, are prioritizing the protection of minority rights in Bangladesh. He revealed that U.S. and Indian national security advisors recently held discussions, where Bangladesh was a central topic. The talks focused on ways to provide maximum support to Bangladesh, facilitate its electoral processes, and safeguard its people.
Garcetti remarked that political transitions are inherently challenging and not always beneficial. However, if the global community supports such changes, they can yield positive outcomes. He also highlighted the deep connections between the U.S., India, and Bangladesh, which surpass those shared with many other countries.
On October 31, former President Donald Trump condemned communal violence in Bangladesh through a post on X (formerly Twitter), asserting that such incidents would never have occurred under his leadership. Trump, set to be inaugurated as president on January 20, has been called upon by the Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council to intervene in Bangladesh, citing ongoing persecution of religious and ethnic minorities. The council expressed concerns about the "endangered existence" of minorities in the country due to persistent oppression.
