Government employees in Bangladesh are set to enjoy an extended holiday during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, with a total of five consecutive official holidays declared. However, with additional holidays surrounding this period—including Independence Day, Shab-e-Qadr, and weekends—the country is effectively heading into an extended holiday stretch. Within an 11-day period, only two working days will remain open.
Based on moon sighting, Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to fall on March 31. The Ministry of Public Administration has designated a five-day official holiday from March 29 to April 2. This includes a general holiday on Eid day itself, along with two days before and after the festival, declared as public holidays through executive orders.
Additionally, March 28, the day before the official holiday starts, is both a Friday (a regular weekend holiday) and a holiday for Shab-e-Qadr. Just before that, March 26 marks Bangladesh’s Independence Day, a national holiday. Offices will only be open for one day in between, on March 27.
After the Eid break, offices will reopen on April 3 (Thursday), followed immediately by another weekend on April 4 and 5 (Friday and Saturday). As a result, between March 26 and April 5—an 11-day stretch—offices will operate for only two days, on March 27 and April 3.
According to leave policies, casual leave cannot be taken to bridge gaps between public holidays, as it would result in continuous leave. However, employees may apply for earned leave if needed.
