The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has initiated a study to evaluate the impact of US tariffs on Bangladesh’s bilateral trade, according to NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan. The research aims to determine which products are most affected and the extent of duties imposed, amid concerns over trade competitiveness.

Speaking to media, Khan explained that the study is still in its early stages, with efforts focused on identifying US-imported products, their respective duties, and variations in value. The analysis covers multiple angles to assess which items face the highest tariffs and whether quota restrictions play a role. He emphasized that no decisions can be made without comprehensive data, which will guide the next steps in trade policy.

Following the assessment, discussions will take place to address potential challenges. A high-level meeting convened by the finance ministry is scheduled for Sunday to review the findings and formulate a strategic response. Khan noted that since this is a global issue, Bangladesh will also examine how neighboring countries are managing similar challenges.

Regarding the reported 74 percent tariff on US imports, he stated that the claim is under review, as it might reflect only a few items with the highest duties. He explained that total tax incidence includes various levies such as customs duty, supplemental duty, advance tax, advance income tax, and advance trade VAT, and different products are subject to different tax structures. The NBR is now analyzing actual figures to gain a clearer picture of the situation.
