A new political alliance named “July Unity” (Jolai Oikko) has officially been launched demanding the ban of the Awami League. On Tuesday, May 6, the alliance held a press conference in front of the Madhur Canteen at Dhaka University to formally announce its formation. During the event, Musaddiq Ali Ibn Muhammad, a student of the Department of Bangla at Dhaka University and one of the organizers of the July Unity platform, read out a written statement.

In his speech, Musaddiq said that during the July uprising, more than 2,000 people lost their lives, and nearly 31,000 were injured or disabled. The attack was conducted by state forces and ruling party cadres, which he said was later recognized internationally as a genocide. He warned that some political and non-political groups are now trying to rehabilitate the Awami League, a move that he described as a blatant insult to the martyrs and victims of the uprising. He said such efforts would also destroy any hope for restoring democracy in Bangladesh.

Musaddiq further stated that they are deeply concerned about the safety of the revolutionaries who took part in the July movement. According to him, the Awami League and its allies have been trying to discredit the participants in the uprising by raising various allegations. In light of these realities, Musaddiq announced the formation of a broad-based national alliance under the name “July Unity,” which brings together social and political organizations of different ideologies.
