Five senior leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) have been served show-cause notices over an unapproved trip to Cox’s Bazar on the first anniversary of the July Uprising that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government.
Those served with notices are Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, Chief Organisers Sarjis Alam (Northern Region) and Hasnat Abdullah (Southern Region), Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Jarah, and Joint Convenor Khaled Saifullah, who is also Jarah’s husband.
According to the notice, the trip took place without prior notification or approval from the party's political council. The five leaders have been directed to appear before party convener Md Nahid Islam and member-secretary Akhtar Hossain within 24 hours and provide a written explanation detailing the purpose and circumstances of their visit.
The notices, identical in content, were delivered on Wednesday by Joint Member-Secretary (Office) Salahuddin Sifat, who later confirmed the development to reporters.
The trip took place on 5 August 2025, a day marking the one-year anniversary of the political uprising that unseated the Awami League after 16 years in power. The leaders reportedly arrived at Cox’s Bazar Airport around 11:30 a.m. via a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dhaka. They then checked into the Sea Pearl Beach Resort and Spa at Inani Beach, approximately 20 kilometers from the main town.
Their unexpected presence in the coastal district sparked speculation in political circles and fueled discussions on social media. Unverified rumors suggested the leaders were meeting with former U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas. However, later reports confirmed that Haas is currently in Washington, and no credible evidence supported the claim of his presence in Bangladesh.
