The Teesta River has once more risen above its danger threshold, causing flooding in several low-lying parts of Dimla upazila in Nilphamari district.

Officials say heavy rainfall and upstream landslides pushed the river level up from Tuesday night. By 6am Wednesday, the water at the Dalia Teesta Barrage measured 52.22cm, exceeding the official danger mark of 52.15cm by 7cm, according to Nurul Islam, a gauge reader for the Dalia Water Development Board.

This is the second time in August that the Teesta has crossed its danger level — earlier, on August 3, the water had peaked 5cm above the limit at the same location.

In response, all 44 sluice gates of the barrage have been opened to release excess water, confirmed Amitabh Chowdhury, Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board’s Dalia Division.

Flooding has since affected low-lying areas including Purba Chatnai, Paschim Chatnai, Tepakharibari, Khagakharibari, Khalisha Chapani, Jhunagach Chapani, and Gayabari. Local representatives report that at least 15 riverine char areas are now submerged.
