UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has stated that the repetition of human rights violations in Bangladesh should not occur. He expressed this view during a press conference on Wednesday, October 30, held at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka.
“We are witnessing a different Bangladesh,” Turk said. “The recurrence of past human rights violations in Bangladesh must not happen.” He emphasized that the UN Human Rights Office prioritizes the thorough investigation of killings that occurred in July and August, alongside supporting Bangladesh’s socio-economic reform efforts.
Furthermore, Turk highlighted the issue of cases being filed against Awami League activists and journalists without proper investigation, urging due process and fair handling.
Volker Turk arrived in Dhaka on October 28 for a two-day visit. During his time, he has already met with seven advisers and discussed the potential establishment of a UN human rights office in Dhaka. On Wednesday morning, he also met with Foreign Affairs Adviser Towhid Hossain to discuss human rights concerns in Bangladesh.
