Bangladesh Prisons to be Renamed: Inspector General of Prisons

Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain, Inspector General of Prisons, announced on Tuesday that the government is taking steps to rename Bangladesh’s prison system as “Correctional Service Bangladesh.” The announcement was made during a press conference at the Department of Prisons.

 

The Inspector General also stated that to address severe staffing shortages, the government has approved new recruitment. A request has been submitted for an additional 1,500 personnel.

 

He emphasized that the hiring process has been conducted transparently, without any financial irregularities. So far, 34 employees have been dismissed, and several others are facing departmental action.

 

Brig. Gen. Hossain added:

 

> “Our focus is to make prisons more productive. Efforts are underway to restore a supportive environment for inmates.”

 

To manage overcrowding, two new central prisons and four district-level facilities have been opened. Additionally, plans are underway to build a central prison hospital in Narayanganj for inmate care. The Inspector General also noted that inmates occasionally contact him directly by phone to raise concerns.
