Many people gathered at the site of the incident to pay tribute to Alex Pretti, who was killed by ICE gunfire, leaving flowers in his memory.
Susan said that Alex deeply disliked how humans were destroying the natural landscape without reason. He loved nature, she explained, and while he cared for his country, he strongly opposed what people were doing to the environment.
Alex Pretti’s father said he had spoken with his son about two weeks earlier. During that conversation, Alex told his family that he was aware he must not do anything reckless while taking part in protests.
According to CBS, Alex Pretti was carrying a firearm at the time of the shooting. However, U.S. Border Patrol officials did not clarify whether he had drawn the weapon. Videos recorded by bystanders also do not clearly show whether he took the gun out.
Al Jazeera reported that a video from the scene shows ICE officers using pepper spray on Pretti and other demonstrators. In the footage, Pretti appears to resist the spray and assist fellow protesters. Several ICE agents are then seen forcing him to the ground and beating him. While he was in that position, multiple shots were fired, and his body was later seen lying on the street.
At a press conference on Saturday, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said Alex had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and later died while receiving treatment at a hospital. He confirmed that Pretti was a resident of Minneapolis and a U.S. citizen.
