In Sylhet’s Gowainghat upazila, a man identified as Riazul Islam—better known as “Shooter Riaz” and described as the leader of a local armed group—was caught by villagers on suspicion of child abduction. Witnesses said he attempted to escape when he sensed danger, leaving behind his twin daughters.
The incident took place yesterday afternoon in Ali village. Locals became suspicious and stopped him as he tried to flee, later handing him over to police after a brief scuffle.
According to law enforcement, Riazul and his associates have long been accused of crimes including land grabbing, extortion, abduction, drug trade, and violent attacks in Narayanganj’s Rupganj and Sonargaon areas. He has more than 20 cases filed against him under various charges.
Police sources said that at the time of his arrest, he had come to Sylhet with his wife and daughters for a visit. When he realized security forces were trailing him, he left his children on the veranda of a house and tried to run. Residents chased him down, assaulted him, and handed him to the authorities.
Law enforcers later confirmed his identity as “Shooter Riaz.” He had previously been arrested on multiple occasions but repeatedly secured bail and returned to criminal activities, according to police officials. His vehicle was seized, while his wife took custody of the children.
He has now been transferred to Rupganj police, where several arrest warrants remain pending against him.
