Heavy rain disrupted the morning routine of many in Dhaka today. One parent, Pratik Bardhan, who lives in Madhubagh, Moghbazar, struggled while taking his child to a school in Eskaton. Since classes begin at 8:00 a.m., he left early by rickshaw, but the journey quickly became difficult.
There were very few rickshaws available, while many students were trying to get to school. Even after finding one, there was no plastic cover to shield them from the rain. Strong gusts of wind repeatedly pushed away the umbrella he was holding, leaving both parent and child soaked. On his way afterward to Karwan Bazar, he was drenched once again.
Rain began in Dhaka early Wednesday morning, with dark clouds covering the sky and creating conditions more typical of the monsoon season. According to the weather office, the rainfall is being caused by thundercloud activity along with a low-pressure system over the sea.
The rain is not limited to the capital. Showers have been reported in many parts of the country. Earlier forecasts had warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall across all divisions over the next four days, along with temporary waterlogging in some places. Landslide risks were also mentioned for hilly regions in Chattogram Division.
Although rainfall in Dhaka was not extremely high overnight, the cloudy sky, thunder, and periods of gusty wind continued through the morning. Waterlogging was already visible in some areas, making travel difficult for students and office workers.
Meteorologists said the weather could continue throughout the day, with rain stopping and starting at intervals. Conditions might improve briefly around midday, but the change may not last long.
Why is it raining now?
This time of year in Bangladesh usually brings seasonal storms known as Kalbaishakhi, which are short but intense, often accompanied by strong winds, dark clouds, and sudden rain. However, the current weather pattern is different because the rainfall has been continuing on and off since yesterday.
Weather experts explained that a deep cloud system has formed over the country and is moving slowly. In addition, a weather system over the Bay of Bengal is also influencing conditions. Because of these combined factors, rain is expected to continue intermittently rather than as one continuous downpour.
Rainfall across the country
Several districts have already experienced significant rainfall in the last 24 hours. Nikli in Kishoreganj recorded the highest amount with 161 mm. Bhola received 151 mm, while Feni recorded 148 mm. Rainfall above 88 mm is considered very heavy.
Forecasters added that heavy rain will not fall everywhere at the same time. Some regions, such as Bhola and Khulna, have already started to see improving conditions. In Dhaka, cloudy skies and occasional rain are likely to remain for most of the day, though showers may lessen by late afternoon.
