Appellate Division Halts Selina Hayat Ivy’s Bail in Five Separate Cases

The chamber court of the Appellate Division has suspended the High Court’s order granting bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five separate cases, including one for murder.

At the same time, the chamber court set November 17 for a hearing by the Appellate Division’s regular bench on five separate petitions filed by the state challenging Ivy’s bail. Justice Md Rezaul Haque, the chamber judge, issued the order on Wednesday.

Earlier, on November 9, the High Court had granted bail to Ivy, who was then in jail, in five cases linked to the anti-discrimination movement, including three for murder and two for causing grievous injury.

Following the bail order, the state filed three separate petitions on November 10, seeking to stay the bail orders. Those petitions were placed before the chamber court that day but were marked as “not today” for hearing. Later, two more similar petitions were filed by the state. All five petitions came up for hearing in the chamber court today.

The state was represented by Additional Attorney General Anik R Haque, while Senior Advocate Sara Hossain and Lawyer SM Hridoy Rahman appeared for Ivy.

“The chamber court has suspended the High Court’s bail order in all five cases. The state’s appeals have been scheduled for hearing before the Appellate Division’s regular Bench No. 2 on November 17.”

Police arrested Ivy early on May 9 this year from her residence in Deovogh, Narayanganj city. She was later shown arrested in five separate cases filed over the anti-discrimination protests, including three murder and two attempted murder charges.

Between 2003 and 2011, Ivy served as the mayor of Narayanganj Municipality. She later went on to win three consecutive elections as the mayor of the newly formed Narayanganj City Corporation.
