Anti-Corruption Commission’s Findings

At a briefing on 22 May, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) stated that Sheikh Hasina had provided inaccurate information in her asset declaration for the 2008 national election. In that affidavit, she reported owning 6.50 acres of land, valued at 175,000 taka at the time of purchase.

However, according to the ACC, their verification showed that she actually held more than 28 acres of immovable property under her name. The ACC later sent a formal letter to the Election Commission, asking it to take necessary measures.

Land office sources note that the house on Dhanmondi Road 32 is legally owned by the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust. Her residence “Sudha Sadan” in Dhanmondi is registered under the names of Sajeeb Wazed and Saima Wazed.

Assets of Asaduzzaman Khan

Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, elected previously from the Dhaka-12 constituency, had submitted an affidavit listing his movable and immovable assets during the 12th National Election.

According to the declaration:

He reported holding a little over 8.4 million taka in cash.

Deposits in banks and financial institutions totalled around 8.2 million taka.

Bonds and shares were valued at approximately 2.4 million taka.

Savings certificates and fixed deposits amounted to 21.1 million taka.

Two vehicles were listed with a combined value of 16.1 million taka.

Household electronics and furniture were valued at 200,000 taka.

He declared 220 million taka as business capital, shown as loans.

He listed 10 bhori of gold, though without stating its value.

In terms of land:

171 decimals (over five bighas) of agricultural land, purchased for 10.6 million taka.

18.5 decimals of non-agricultural land, valued at 5.8 million taka at the time of acquisition.

Two residential properties were mentioned — a village home valued at 8 million taka, and another property valued at 1.3 million taka.

Altogether, his declared assets amounted to around 102.5 million taka, excluding the value of the gold.

The ACC is also investigating him separately. Officials stated that he owns assets beyond known income sources. A case has been filed alleging that he accumulated 164.2 million taka in wealth inconsistent with legal earnings.

What the Tribunal Ruled

Sheikh Hasina was ousted on 5 August during the July uprising and sought refuge in India, where she remains. Reports also indicate that Asaduzzaman Khan is currently staying in India.

The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan to death for crimes against humanity. Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun received a five-year prison term.

Presiding Judge Golam Mortuza Mozumdar stated in the verdict that all assets held by Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan are to be confiscated. The government has also been instructed to provide a “considerable amount of compensation” to the families of those killed during the July events.

The court directed that a copy of the judgment be sent to the Dhaka District Magistrate for implementation of these orders.
