At around 8:30 in the morning, a loud crash startled people in the area. Shopkeepers rushed outside to find a truck loaded with gas cylinders badly mangled and lying across the highway. More than a hundred cylinders had spilled from the vehicle and were rolling across the road. Nearby, on the median, lay the crushed body of an unidentified person. The scene unfolded on Monday morning in the Nizampur Bazar area of Mirsarai upazila.
By 9:00am, a visit to the site showed the damaged truck tilted under the pedestrian overpass on the Chattogram-bound lane of the Dhaka–Chattogram highway. Local residents were standing guard to prevent the scattered gas cylinders from being stolen. Due to the accident, traffic on the Chattogram-bound lane was completely halted. Vehicles were forced to move slowly through an alternative route, causing a traffic jam stretching nearly two kilometres from Nizampur Bazar to Barotakia Bazar. As of 9:20am, no highway police personnel had arrived at the scene.
Eyewitness Mohammad Salauddin, a local resident and van driver, said the truck lost control and hit the road divider before overturning. As a result, hundreds of gas cylinders fell onto the highway. He added that some people attempted to take the cylinders after the crash, but locals stopped them and informed the highway police.
Highway Police Sergeant Shamim Hossain said around 10:00am that authorities were aware of the accident and had begun rescue operations at the site. He confirmed that the deceased was believed to be a pedestrian and that efforts were underway to identify the victim. He also said the truck’s driver and helper were still missing following the incident.
