Fresh clashes erupted between police and activists of Inqilab Mancha in the Shahbagh area of the capital on Friday evening, with law enforcement using tear gas and sound grenades to disperse protesters.
The second round of confrontations began around 7:35 pm and was continuing as of 8:20 pm. Earlier in the evening, Inqilab Mancha supporters had been staging a sit-in at the Shahbagh intersection.
Around 7:30 pm, a group of police officers was moving from the area beside BIRDEM Hospital toward the InterContinental Hotel crossing. Protesters chanted slogans at the officers, and a section of the demonstrators chased them, triggering renewed violence.
Additional police units arrived from the InterContinental side and fired sound grenades and tear gas canisters. Protesters responded by throwing bricks and stones at police. Amid the chaos, a motorcycle was seen lying damaged on the road.
As the situation escalated, demonstrators scattered from Shahbagh toward Dhaka University, Matsya Bhaban, and Kataban roads, where intermittent clashes continued. Shortly before 9:00 pm, police temporarily withdrew from the Shahbagh intersection, allowing protesters to regroup and resume their sit-in.
Earlier in the afternoon, around 4:30 pm, clashes had also taken place near the InterContinental Hotel, leaving several people injured, including Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber and Dhaka University spokesperson and DUCSU leader Fatima Tasnim Jhuma.
According to Dhaka Medical College Hospital Director Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman, more than 50 injured individuals sought treatment at the hospital. He confirmed that none of the injured had sustained gunshot wounds, adding that most suffered cuts, bruises, and blunt-force injuries and received treatment in the emergency department before being released.
