Nurul Haque (Nur), the BNP-backed candidate of Patuakhali-3 (Galachipa-Dashmina) and president of the Gana Adhikar Parishad, has confirmed that reports of him being shot, which circulated on social media, are completely false. He stated that he is in good health and currently present in his electoral constituency.
Earlier, a social media post claimed that Nurul Haque had been injured in a shooting and was receiving treatment at a hospital in the capital, causing concern among his supporters.
Addressing the rumors, Nurul Haque told Prothom Alo that he had seen the reports online himself, but emphasized that no such incident occurred. He called it a deliberate piece of misinformation aimed at undermining the morale of his supporters and spreading fear among grassroots voters.
However, Nurul Haque alleged that his supporters have been attacked and harassed by the team of Hasan Mamun, a rival BNP ‘rebel’ candidate. He claimed that Hasan Mamun’s wife, being a government official, exerts influence over the local administration, which has hindered effective action despite complaints being filed.
Nurul Haque further said that even after submitting written complaints to the District Returning Officer and the Superintendent of Police on Tuesday, no action has been taken. He added that his election office was set on fire the previous night and that provocative statements were made near his sister’s residence, creating tension.
He expressed concern that these incidents are spreading fear among voters and warned that unless the situation is brought under control, voter turnout at polling stations could be affected. Nurul Haque also mentioned that he requested the Superintendent of Police on Wednesday to increase security in vulnerable areas.
