Newly elected candidates of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami have taken their oaths both as members of the 13th National Parliament and as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.

The oath-taking ceremony took place today (Tuesday) at 12:23 pm, when the Jamaat lawmakers were sworn in as Members of Parliament. Four minutes later, at 12:27 pm, they took a second oath as members of the reform council.

The event was held in the oath room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin administered both oaths separately to the newly elected Jamaat MPs.

Earlier in the day, Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher told the media that if lawmakers from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) refused to take the reform council oath, Jamaat MPs would also abstain, arguing that a parliament without reforms would be meaningless. Despite this position, the Jamaat lawmakers ultimately took both oaths.

Earlier, shortly before 11:00 am, BNP’s elected candidates were sworn in as Members of Parliament by the Chief Election Commissioner. However, they declined to take the oath as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.

Before the ceremony began, BNP Standing Committee member and Cox’s Bazar-1 MP Salahuddin Ahmed instructed party lawmakers present at the oath room. He stated that they were elected under the Constitution as Members of Parliament, not as members of the reform council, and therefore would not take that oath.
