Mosquito control teams visit neighborhoods to spray insecticide and fog, but in many cases their work seems limited to taking photos. In areas like Uttara’s lakes, mosquito breeding has become widespread.

According to Imrul Kayes of Dhaka North City Corporation, the rise of Culex mosquitoes is closely tied to poor waste management and inadequate drainage. Polluted, stagnant water in canals, drains, and জলাশয় is creating ideal breeding conditions. Cleaning one canal often leads to another becoming clogged again. He emphasized that spraying alone is not enough—effective drainage systems and proper waste management are essential.

Field workers report that many drains are blocked with garbage, preventing insecticides from reaching stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Without direct contact, the chemicals are ineffective. DNCC has begun coordinating with its waste management বিভাগ to address the issue more comprehensively.

Meanwhile, Kabirul Bashar from Jahangirnagar University noted that mosquito populations are increasing nationwide, not just in the capital. He pointed out that weaknesses in local government structures, along with the prolonged absence of elected mayors and ward councillors, have reduced both coordination and oversight.

For immediate control, he recommends urgent cleaning of drains and along with rapid larviciding efforts, as there are no quick alternatives.
