A violent clash broke out between rival student groups at the Latif Hostel of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute in Tejgaon Industrial Area, Dhaka, late Monday night around 1 a.m. At least ten students were injured, four of them seriously, according to police reports. Both groups are blaming each other for the incident.
Initial reports indicate the conflict began with a verbal dispute over campus dominance, which escalated into a physical fight. At one point, assailants reportedly entered the hostel rooms armed with homemade weapons, resulting in serious injuries to several students.
The incident created tension across the campus throughout the night. Additional police personnel were deployed to maintain order.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ibne Mizan told reporters that police received reports of the fight at the Latif Hostel around midnight and responded immediately. He confirmed that four students were seriously injured, while several others sustained minor injuries.
Following the clash, Rakibul Islam, central president of Bangladesh Chhatra Dal, posted on Facebook accusing members of Bangladesh Chhatra Shibir of launching a brutal attack inside the hostel with homemade weapons. According to the post, a Chhatra Dal member was severely injured after being attacked with a machete. He called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible and vowed retaliation, saying that over the past 15 years, Chhatra Dal members have repeatedly suffered attacks on campuses.
In response, Abu Sadik Kayem, vice president of the Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) and international secretary of Chhatra Shibir, accused Chhatra Dal of carrying out a brutal assault using rods and homemade weapons against Shibir members inside the hostel. He criticized the ongoing violence on campuses and urged the government to control party-affiliated student groups to prevent further disruption of campus life.
DC Ibne Mizan stated that hostel administration officials and student representatives will meet to resolve the matter, and legal action may be taken if necessary.
