Student Leader Accuses Former Chief Prosecutor of Irregularities
A leader of the anti-discrimination student movement, Mohammad Samrat Robayet, has raised allegations of misconduct against former Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Mohammad Tajul Islam. He claims there were attempts to shield former lawmaker ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, who is accused in a crimes against humanity case linked to the July uprising in Chattogram.
According to the অভিযোগ, Tajul Islam did not allow an arrest warrant to be issued against Fazle Karim’s son, Faraz Karim Chowdhury, despite witness testimonies naming him. The অভিযোগ was submitted to the current Chief Prosecutor, Md. Aminul Islam, who confirmed that the matter is under investigation but declined to provide further details.
Samrat Robayet also alleged that a group of prosecutors worked together to protect certain accused individuals and delay proceedings. Additionally, there were claims that an earlier prosecutor sought a large sum of money in exchange for securing bail for Fazle Karim.
In response, Tajul Islam rejected all allegations, calling them false and politically motivated attempts to undermine the বিচার process. He stated that all তদন্ত and prosecution actions during his tenure were conducted independently and based on evidence.
Other accused prosecutors have also denied any involvement, describing the claims as baseless.
The tribunal was restructured in September 2024, with Tajul Islam appointed as Chief Prosecutor. He was later replaced in February following the formation of a new government.
