Vermicelli Demand Surges Ahead of Eid

In the days leading up to Eid, vermicelli sales see a major boost across Bangladesh. At a branch of Unimart in Gulshan on March 16, shelves filled with vermicelli attracted a noticeable crowd. One customer purchased 20 packets at once, while another shopper consulted with his mother to choose the right varieties.

Among local brands, imported premium options also stood out—some even featuring Shah Rukh Khan as a brand ambassador. High-end vermicelli products were priced around 1,300 BDT per kilogram, while certain imported varieties exceeded 1,600 BDT per kilogram.

Local brands offered a wide price range. Premium lachcha vermicelli ranged from mid to high prices depending on quality and packaging, while more affordable options remained available for everyday consumers.

At Shwapno in Bashundhara Residential Area, a shopper named Hasanur Radia shared that she bought three packets of vermicelli for Eid preparations. Prices there varied significantly depending on brand and quantity.

Market Size and Trends

Although there is no exact nationwide figure, estimates suggest that vermicelli sales during Eid reach massive volumes. In Bogura—the country’s largest production hub—business owners expect sales to approach around 1,000 crore BDT this season.

Back in 2022, Eid-centered vermicelli sales in Bogura alone reached about 300 crore BDT. Since then, prices have risen. Premium ghee-fried lachcha vermicelli now sells between 1,300 and 1,600 BDT per kilogram, while thin vermicelli ranges from 160 to 180 BDT per kilogram. Lower-cost varieties made with alternative fats are also widely available.

At Karwan Bazar, both branded and loose vermicelli are sold. Open vermicelli can cost as low as 80–100 BDT per kilogram after bargaining, making it accessible to lower-income buyers.

Regional Production and Sales

Factories in Chattogram, including well-known producers, distribute vermicelli across the country. Local traders estimate that Eid sales in Chattogram alone could exceed 100 crore BDT, though exact figures remain unofficial.

In Bogura, there are nearly a thousand small and large factories producing vermicelli. Industry insiders say combined sales during the two Eid festivals reach roughly 1,000 crore BDT annually.

A Staple of Eid Celebration

Regardless of price differences, vermicelli remains an essential part of Eid celebrations. From rich recipes with thick milk and nuts to simpler versions made with basic ingredients, the dish brings families together—making it one of the most cherished traditions of the festival.
