Senior Supreme Court lawyer Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajol has been appointed as the country’s 18th Attorney General.
The Ministry of Law issued a notification on Wednesday confirming the appointment. According to the notice, the President has appointed Kajol to the position until further orders, and the decision takes immediate effect.
Kajol has been serving as a member of the BNP’s executive committee and as senior joint secretary general of the Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum. He previously held the post of secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association and was also elected as a member of the Bangladesh Bar Council, where he served as chairman of its executive committee.
He began his legal career in 1995 as a lawyer at the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Court. In 1996, he was enrolled as an advocate of the High Court Division, and later in 2008, he became a lawyer of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. He was elevated to the status of senior advocate in 2023.
Kajol also has experience in diplomatic service, having worked at the Bangladesh High Commission in London from 2003 to 2006.
During his student years, he was involved in journalism. He earned his LLB (Honours) in 1993 and LLM in 1994 from the University of Dhaka. Later, he obtained another LLB (Honours) degree from the University of London in 2005 and completed the Bar Vocational Course at City University London in 2006. In the same year, he was called to the Bar from Lincoln’s Inn in the United Kingdom.
Following the fall of the Awami League government after the July mass uprising, Md. Asaduzzaman was appointed as the country’s 17th Attorney General on August 8, 2024. He had been serving as the human rights affairs secretary of the BNP.
Asaduzzaman resigned from the post on December 27 last year to take part in the 13th national parliamentary elections. After his resignation, Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rauf was given charge of the office.
In the election held on February 12, Asaduzzaman was elected as a Member of Parliament from Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) constituency. Under the BNP-led government, he has been assigned the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
