Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been detained by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB). She was picked up early Tuesday morning from a residence in Dhanmondi and later taken to the DB office, where she is currently being held.

According to DB officials, she was arrested from a relative’s home, and authorities are reviewing the cases filed against her. She is expected to be presented in court under specific charges once the review is completed.

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury stepped down from her position on September 2, 2024, shortly after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. She had been serving as Speaker since April 30, 2013, following the election of Abdul Hamid as President, and remained in the role continuously.

She is among several individuals accused in connection with violence during the July uprising. One of the cases involves the death of a gold worker, Muslim Uddin, who was fatally shot in Rangpur on August 27, 2024. A murder case was filed against 17 people, including Chaudhury and former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, by the victim’s wife.

  • Tipu Munshi has already been arrested in connection with the case. Chaudhury was previously elected as a Member of Parliament from the Rangpur-6 constituency.
