Students of Dhaka University’s Rokeya Hall staged demonstrations demanding the removal of eight students recently appointed to the hall committee of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
The protest began yesterday afternoon around 5:00pm, when students marched through the Rokeya Hall premises opposing what they described as “unauthorised political activities” in the dormitory.
Later, at about 12:50am today, a group of 70–100 female students from Rokeya Hall and other halls brought out a procession towards Raju Bhashkorjo, chanted slogans, and held a brief rally. They then marched to the VC Chattar and staged a sit-in.
Around 11:20pm, the demonstrators gave Rokeya Hall Provost Prof Husne Ara Begum a 30-minute deadline to take a final stance on the matter.
Adiba Sayma Khan, a Sociology student, told reporters that the provost had indicated some political parties had donated amenities such as water filters, vending machines, and dustbins to the hall—implying that their presence in the hall was acceptable. “We reject any form of political activity here, whether open or hidden,” she said.
Prof Husne Ara Begum responded that she could not decide unilaterally, as the matter was under discussion by the university’s central administration. “You may continue shouting, but the final decision will come from them,” she remarked.
