Garment workers block Kuril roads demanding wages and allowances
Hundreds of garment workers staged a demonstration in Kuril around midday on Wednesday, blocking both lanes of the road to press home their demand for pending wages and allowances. The blockade brought traffic to a complete halt, causing severe suffering for commuters.
The protest was carried out by nearly 500 employees of Eurozone Fashion Garments, according to the Gulshan Traffic Division. In a social media update, police informed city dwellers about the disruption and advised them to use alternative routes.
Traffic diversion routes announced
Due to the blockade, vehicles could not move between Kuril and Badda in either direction. To manage congestion, police announced diversions:
1. From Khilkhet, drivers were advised to avoid the flyover and use the lower road towards Mohakhali and Banani.
2. From Rampura, vehicles heading to Kuril were redirected via Badda Link Road to Gulshan-1 and Gulshan-2 before proceeding towards Uttara.
3. Another option from Rampura was to use the New Market–Gulshan-2 route. For those heading towards Rampura, vice versa routes through Kakoli, Amtoli, or Tejgaon were suggested.
Police response
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Gulshan Traffic Division, Ziaur Rahman, confirmed around 1 pm that the blockade was still in place, stalling all vehicles on the Uttara–Badda–Rampura corridor. He said police were in discussion with both workers and factory management to restore normalcy.
Commuters, meanwhile, remained stuck for hours, facing significant hard ship due to the gridlock.
