According to early calculations by the Astronomy Society of the United Arab Emirates, the holy month of Ramadan is expected to begin on Thursday, February 19. That means the start of Ramadan is about 139 days away.
Ibrahim Al Jarwan, chairman of the society, explained that the month will commence based on the sighting of the new moon. The astronomical new moon will occur on Tuesday, February 17, at 4:01 PM (Abu Dhabi time).
However, the crescent will set just one minute after sunset that day, making it impossible to observe on the evening of the 17th. Therefore, after the official moon-sighting committee’s confirmation, Ramadan is likely to begin on Thursday, February 19.
Al Jarwan noted that in Abu Dhabi, fasting hours will initially last about 12 hours and 46 minutes, gradually extending to 13 hours and 25 minutes by the end of the month. Daylight duration will increase from 11 hours and 32 minutes to about 12 hours and 12 minutes during this period.
At the beginning of Ramadan, temperatures in Abu Dhabi are expected to range between 16°C and 28°C, influenced by northern winter winds. Toward the end of the month, temperatures may rise to between 19°C and 32°C, coinciding with the onset of spring weather and western winds.
He also mentioned that rainfall is likely throughout Ramadan, with totals possibly exceeding 15 millimeters, which aligns with the region’s seasonal averages.
